Hi,
Today we walk the Red Canyon – a beautiful creek in southern Eilat mountains (in the Negev) craved by the water in the soft red sandstone. The walk is not long, but still it is in the desert and on the way to the canyon and from it, you have no shade at all. In the canyon you have some ladders to climb so high waterfall in the canyon.
After yesterday we could not find a place to sleep with Xuxa in Eilat, we go with our original plan and went sleeping in one of Eilat mountain free campsites. We did not forget it is the last night of Passover and bought ourselves a big nice hamburger to it near the campfire.
Take care
Gad
A map and sign on the edge of the parking lot, and also a small dog called Xuxa looking for some shade
From the parking lot
Xuxa is asking to be taken up
Or to be pet
Keep going with no shade on the horizon
Trail junction
Getting down a creek in the Basalt rock
Basalt and Limestone
And keep going down
Atzva and Xuxa on top of the cliff
That is what we just down
A bit of green
Trail sign
The red canyon sign and trail (I guess it makes sense it should be red, but it is blue )
But still some walks
Atzva inspecting the beautiful rock
The legend says a monster lives in this cave
Here it comes! Run for your life!
Oh, it is only Xuxa
Walking down…
Nice rock formation
Getting closer….
And closer…
Here it is – The Red Canyon
Atzva and Xuxa eager to get some shade
The red sandstone that the canyon is made of. The red color comes from the iron in it. The sandstone is weaker than the limestone and the Basalt around this is why it the erosion made a canyon in it.
The gate in – look on the rock formation
A ladder… I don’t think Xuxa can jump on it…
Lucky her she is so small.. we can just pick here up
Looking down
Getting narrow in some places
There are trail marks on the wall, not that you an option to go somewhere else than straight
Ready for another ladder Xuxa?
She somehow jumped over there. It sometimes feel she is a goat and not a dog…
Looking up on the layers of sand
And back on the canyon
A ladder Xuxa did not manage to go around
Other rocks locked in the sandstone
The end of the canyon
Beautiful rock formations
And out of the canyon
The way back on exposed sun
Xuxa in the end of the exhausting trail
Atzva is keep walking
The parking lot
Sunbath
An Israeli cannot go without leaving ugly marks such as those
