Beaufort Castle: High Above the Litani
How mad it is that a single limestone ridge above the Litani River has hosted Crusader knights, Mamluk sultans, PLO gunners, and IDF infantry—all standing in the exact same spot to look down at the exact same valley.
The View from the Ridge
If you stand along the northern border near Misgav Am or Metula on a clear day, your eye is naturally drawn across the valley into Southern Lebanon. There, perched precariously on a sheer 300-meter cliff dropping into the Litani River gorge, sits Beaufort Castle (Qala’at al-Shaqif).
At 710 meters above sea level, it doesn’t just offer a panoramic view of the Upper Galilee, the Hula Valley, and Mount Hermon—it commands it.

Layers of Fortification: Crusader Steel to Concrete Bunkers
Few strategic positions in the Levant have been fought over with such repeating historical consistency.
* 1139 – The Crusaders: King Fulk of Jerusalem captured the site and named it Belfort (“Beautiful Fort”). The Knights Templar later expanded it, carving deep dry moats into the living rock and building massive stone keeps to guard the northern marches of the Kingdom of Jerusalem.
* 1190 – Saladin’s Siege: Saladin laid siege to the fortress for over a year. The defender, Reynald of Sidon, famously played for time using negotiation tactics before the castle eventually surrendered.
* 1268 – The Mamluks: Sultan Baibars took the fort, rebuilding walls and adding Islamic inscriptions that still survive in the upper courtyard.
* 1970s–1982 – The PLO Stronghold: In the modern era, the castle’s ancient subterranean vaults and strategic elevation were repurposed as an artillery position, directly targeting northern Israeli communities in the Galilee.
* 1982–2000 – IDF Security Zone Outpost: Captured by Golani and Sayeret Matkal during the opening days of the 1982 First Lebanon War, Beaufort became the most famous—and fortified—IDF post in the South Lebanon Security Zone. Deep concrete trenches, subterranean living quarters, and radar domes were grafted onto the medieval masonry.
The Strategic Value: Key Terrain
From a tactical perspective, Beaufort is a textbook definition of Key Terrain.
* Topographical Dominance: Anyone holding the castle controls line-of-sight and direct fire over the entire Litani passage and the northern approaches to the Galilee panhandle.
* Defensive Geometry: The northern and eastern faces are virtually unassailable due to the vertical cliff drop into the river gorge. Attackers throughout history were forced to approach from the narrow south-western ridge—a choke point heavily guarded by outer ditches and bastions.
Demolition and the Present
In May 2000, as Israeli forces withdrew from Southern Lebanon, the modern military installations inside and around the castle were detonated to prevent their use. The blast shook the ridge, destroying the concrete bunkers built during the 18-year IDF presence while leaving much of the resilient medieval stone standing.
Today, Beaufort remains quiet atop its cliff—a silent, jagged silhouette against the horizon. For those looking across from the Israeli side of the fence, it serves as a stark reminder of how deeply history, geography, and conflict are layered into the very rocks of this land.
