Names and surnames in the army

Hi,
My surname is Rekanati (I have only one of those, unlike Atzva which have several surnames). When you sit down in a post like we do, you have to think of cases and how you will react. For example – what happens if a terrorist enter the base in the middle of the night? Well you have a quick and long procedure you have to do in order to quickly eliminate the threat.

But how will you recognize it is not one of your friends for the company? Well we have marks that we use. But I thought – why not asking who is it?

Then I came across a problem – people usually recognize themselves in their first name – Omri, Tomer, Assaf, Gad…..
But here in the army we usually calls people in their family name (surnames): Lyn, Amzaleg, Ya’akobi and so on. Yes people call me here Rekanati.  In some point you realize you don’t know the person’s name, only his family name. Most of the times it is funny. “We don’t have Omri here” you say, and Amzaleg, that sits next to you says:”I’m Omri”. =)

Well in the case we have the suspicion that a terrorist entered the base I better not ask who it is. I might get the answer “Omri”, think to myself “We don’t have Omri in the company” and shoot him =|

Take care
